Interactionism is a sociological theory that places a great deal of emphasis on interactions among individuals, groups, and others who interact on what is known as the micro-level of sociological analysis. The sum and nature of these interactions form society and the social self. Symbolic interactionism as a social theoretical framework starts from the presupposition that our social world is constructed through the mundane acts of everyday social interaction. Through the repetitive act of interaction, individuals as actors in relation to social groups constitute symbolic and shared meanings. In examining why this theory never had widespread acceptance in France, a multilevel analysis is suggested: logic of science for conceptual or theoretical evolution; social psychology of science for the social processes among idea submitters and idea accepters; and sociology of science for community-wide, institutional support and long-term promulgation of the ideas.
